Over 30 years ago the Old Stone Oven Company first introduced the baking store for home use and it is still the best. Thicker than other stones available, it has a porosity and heat retention that is perfect for a good crust. The Old Stone Oven Pizza Stone duplicates crispy pizzeria quality pizza - crust and all- in a standard kitchen oven. The Stone can also be used to bake bread, rolls and biscuits giving them a very special texture and quality or as a warming tray to keep waffles, pancakes, fried chicken, etc warm until ready to serve.

I use it primarily for baking bread, which it does beautifully, and the occasional pizza, which produces wonderful results. I had been holding out not wanting to spend money on an item I thought was unnecessary. I now wish that I'd bought one of these years ago - it's great.

So, beware, it appears some people have received the chemical-smelling stone and others not. The reason I am giving it two stars instead of one is that it did bake the pizza evenly, which I ate (not sure I should have considering the chemical smell), but Amazon did refund the purchase entirely. I bought this stone in April of '09 and didn't use it until September. When I used it for the first time it gave off a foul chemical smell that permeated the entire house.

I do not recommend this product. There is a crack in the stone, and I've only used it twice.

Also, I think that Amazon took a note from all the bad reviews and started shipping this item extra carefully. I love it. Mine came in three separate boxes with packing materials filled in between each layer. This is a fantastic item. It was rated highly by Cook's Illustrated and is the perfect size for pizzas, breads, and other baked goods.

When I placed the order i chosed the free super saver deliver and it got to my house the next day. The package total weight was 31 pounds according to fedex. I ordered my old stone oven and it works great. Amazon did an excellent job on packaging the stone so that it does not break when being shipped.
